Vitamins help in the body's ability to fight disease and are an essential part of the enzyme system. They help to transform mineral elements into structural components of bones and teeth. Vitamins are known for their important role in red blood cell formation, reproduction and assistance in maintaining appetite and a healthy skin and coat.

Vitamin A:
Helps to maintain vision and protect the body against infection. Given in the correct amount it is essential for healthy skin and coat.
Vitamin D:
Necessary for calcium and phosphorus absorption and metabolism. It promotes normal bone calcification and is responsible for bone and joint formation. Excessive Vitamin D can result in rickets, depressed growth, soft tissue problems with the stomach wall, heart muscle, lung and blood vessel.
Vitamin E:
Also known as Tocopherol – it is a biological antioxidant that helps to prevent rancidity in fats.
It is also responsible for normal reproduction.
Vitamin E deficiencies can result in stiff gait, muscle weakness, giving birth to weak or dead puppies or gestation failure and internal haemorrhaging.
Prolonged excessive consumption of Vitamin E can stop the absorption of other fat soluble vitamins which may cause problems with clotting of the blood.
Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid:
These are essential for the function of the nervous system and the formation of red blood cells.
Anaemia is the most common sign of a deficiency in either of these vitamins.
Riboflavin B2:
Essential for the function of the nervous system, healthy skin and coat, utilizing energy and tissue repair.
Deficiencies can result in weight loss, neurological disorder and dermatitis.
Niacin and Panthothenic Acid:
Essential to maintain integrity of the nervous system, skin and hair.
Deficiencies can result in loss of appetite, dermatitis and alternating constipation and diarrhoea
Choline:
Aids in bone development, building and maintaining cell structure and nervous system function.
Deficiencies may result in poor growth, and deposits of fat in and around the liver.
Thiamine B1:
Essential for the nervous system. Deficiencies may result in loss of appetite, weakness, weight loss and convulsive seizures.

Minerals are essential in ensuring bone and tissue development and correct functioning of the body. It is vital that you use a complete food that has been formulated by a nutritionist and competent manufacturer.
The measurement of the mineral content in any pet food is known in general terms as Ash.
Ash contains calcium, phosphorus, sodium chloride, potassium and other minerals which are essential nutrients.
A diet that is low in ash may not supply your pet with all the minerals it needs which could subsequently cause health problems.

Cobalt:
An integral part of B12 and provides for efficient haemoglobin production.
Calcium and Phosphorus:
Essential for normal bone development. When phosphorus levels are higher than calcium in the food then abnormalities of the bone may appear.
A deficiency of these two minerals can lead to bone weakness and skeletal deformities.
Over supplementing the two can also adversely affect bone growth and development.
Copper:
Essential for the utilisation of iron. Too much copper can significantly reduce absorption.
Deficiencies may result in anaemia and bone abnormalities.
Iron:
Essential for formation of haemoglobin which is necessary for transporting oxygen around the bloodstream to all parts of the body.
Deficiencies may result in anaemia
Magnesium:
Closely associated with calcium and phosphorus, both in distribution and metabolism.
Excess magnesium may upset calcium absorption.
Manganese:
A trace mineral essential for bone formation, growth and reproduction.
Also has an associated role with Vitamin K and the blood clotting response.
Excessive levels of calcium and phosphorus can interfere with the absorption of manganese.
Potassium:
Essential for body fluid, nerve transmission, certain metabolic processes including maintaining the heartbeat.
Sodium and Chloride:
Controls the passage of nutrients in the cells as well as water metabolism.
Zinc:
Essential for normal bone, muscle and hair growth.
Deficiencies may result in emaciation, retarded growth and general debilitation. It may also occasionally affect hair quality and texture.
All Simpsons Premium products contain the recommended amounts of minerals.
