When it comes to cleaning your dog’s ears you need to take care. You should never try using a cotton bud as you could cause real damage.

Why should I clean my dog’s ears?

Your dog can’t tell you when their ears are hurting so you need to get into the habit of checking them regularly. Ear mites are extremely common and your dog’s ears might need a good clean if they’ve been for a swim in a lake or been rolling in mud. If your dog’s ears become waxy you might need to administer some ear drops to sort them out.

How do I check my dog’s ears?

Make sure your dog is sitting or lying comfortably and then take a peak! If their ears are filled with hair, then you might need to comb it or trim it with baby scissors as you don’t want to accidentally cut them. Once you can see inside clearly, look for any mites, dirt or excess wax (a little bit of wax is okay). If their ears smell bad or there’s blood, you’ll need to make an appointment with your vet because they might have an ear infection.

How do I clean my dog’s ears?

You’ll need to buy some dog ear cleaner from your local pet store, then use damp cotton wool balls to gentle wash the inside of your dog’s ears with the solution. Never pour the ear cleaner directly into your dog’s ears and don’t try to go into the ear canal. Once you’ve given their ears a good clean, use dry cotton wool balls to remove any excess solution. If your dog gets distressed when you clean their ears for the first time, don’t give up. You need to persevere for the good of their health. You can always take a break and try again later on in the day. Why not try to distract them by giving them a dog chew? If your dog has ear mites or an infection, then your vet might prescribe antibiotic drops that will need to be administered once you’ve cleaned them.
