Why is my Dog Scratching?•

ParasitesThe most common reason for a dramatic amount of scratching from your dog compared to normal, is unfortunately parasites such as fleas or ticks. It is actually fairly common for dogs to contract parasites during their lifetime. Try to check your dog’s skin thoroughly for signs of fleas moving about, or even ticks that have burrowed into the skin. Fleas can be dealt with using specialist flea shampoo or even a flea comb where you remove them from your dog’s fur. Ticks on the other hand can be pulled out using tweezers, but you need to ensure there is nothing left under the skin that could cause further infection. If you’re unsure if your dog has parasites, contact your vet immediately.
AllergiesIt is also fairly common for your dog to have allergies to certain food, or something in their environment that is causing them to itch. The cause can vary from dog to dog but is most commonly from dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, some food ingredients, perfumes or even fabrics. It is tough to prevent allergic reactions that will lead to scratching, but you can always ensure that the dog’s environment is as clean as possible. When it comes to food, you can try switching their regular food for another flavour – feel free to browse our Simpsons Premium dog food range.
Dry SkinDog’s often go through seasonal changes in their coat and like humans, can also suffer with dry skin during cold weather. You might often see dry flakes in their fur in the form of dandruff, or will find your dog generally scratching. Make sure to brush your dog frequently and feed them a quality dog food full of essential nutrients and oils for their skin. Browse the Simpsons Premium dog food range.
Boredom or Anxiety
Lastly, dogs can often scratch simply due to boredom when they have nothing to entertain them or occupy their mind. As an owner you must make sure that a dog is not only physically exercised, but in the case of some breeds also mentally exercised. If your dog is particularly anxious due to a change in its routine, this can also lead to unnecessary scratching as well.
